Hourly Invoice Template for Consultants
A consulting invoice usually needs more context than most — the client (or their accounting team) wants to understand what that hour delivered, not just what it cost.
What it should include
- Client and consulting area/project — especially if you advise different areas within the same company.
- Specific description per work block — "diagnostic session," "report drafting," "follow-up meeting" — avoid generic lines like "consulting, 5h."
- Hourly rate, and if you have a different rate for in-person vs. remote work, keep it differentiated.
- Reimbursable expenses (if applicable) — travel, materials — as a separate line from billable time.
- Reference to the contract or scope — contract number or project phase this invoice corresponds to.
Example
| Description | Hours | Rate | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial diagnostic session | 3.0h | $85/h | $255.00 |
| Report drafting and recommendations | 5.0h | $85/h | $425.00 |
| Follow-up meeting (remote) | 1.0h | $85/h | $85.00 |
| Total | 9.0h | $765.00 |
