Hourly Invoice Template for Copywriters
Many copywriters charge per project, but when the work includes research, editing rounds, and meetings, charging by the hour (or breaking the project down into hours) gives both sides much more clarity.
What it should include
- Client and piece/campaign — which text or campaign the work corresponds to (blog, landing page, email, etc.).
- Breakdown by stage — research, writing, editing/review. Each can carry a different rate.
- Number of editing rounds included — same as with design, if you charge extra past a certain number of rounds, show it on the invoice.
- Words or pieces delivered (optional) — some clients prefer to see actual content volume alongside the hours.
Example
| Description | Hours | Rate | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research and source gathering | 2.0h | $40/h | $80.00 |
| Writing — 3 blog posts | 6.0h | $40/h | $240.00 |
| Editing and review round | 1.5h | $40/h | $60.00 |
| Total | 9.5h | $380.00 |
