ProHours vs Clockify: Comparing Free Plans

Clockify has long marketed itself as "free forever," and for years it practically was, with barely any limits. But since April 2026 the free plan changed: it now caps out at 5 users, and several features that used to be free — including invoicing — moved to paid plans. It's worth looking at what's actually left on the free side today.

The real difference: what's left (and what isn't) on each free plan

Clockify is still a solid option for tracking team time without paying anything, if your team has 5 people or fewer. But if your end goal is billing a client for those hours, you now need to upgrade to a paid plan — invoicing, billable rates, and even Excel export all moved to the paid side.

ProHours keeps invoicing, rates, and exports (PDF/CSV) on its free plan from day one, with a cap of 30 time entries a month instead of a cap on users. They're different philosophies: Clockify limits by headcount, ProHours limits by usage volume — but leaves the full flow (track → invoice) open from the free plan.

    When Clockify makes more sense

    • You're a team of up to 5 people who just needs to track time, without invoicing from the same tool.
    • You already have a separate invoicing system and use Clockify purely as a time clock.
    • You need more advanced team management features (screenshots, GPS) available on their Pro/Enterprise plans.

    When ProHours makes more sense

    • You want to try the full flow — from logging the hour to sending the invoice — without paying anything upfront.
    • Your real constraint is work volume, not the number of people on your team.
    • You need client budgets (buckets) or automated recurring work, neither of which exist on Clockify's free plan.
